$15.5m: Court hears motion on 5 firms linked to Jonathan

Justice Babs Kuewumi of a Federal High Court in Lagos will on December 12, hear a motion seeking to set aside the conviction of four firms allegedly used to launder $15.5 million belonging to a former First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan. The motion was filed by a lawyer, Amajuoyi Azubuike Briggs, who is standing trial alongside Waripamo-Owei Dudafa, an aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan and one, Adedamola Bolodeoku, for allegedly concealing the total sum of $15,591,700.00 which they knew formed part of the proceed of an unlawful act, through various banks in Nigeria. The four firms pleaded guilty to laundering the money upon their arraignment alongside the trio by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The firms; Pluto Property and Investment Company Ltd, Seagate Property Development and Investment Company Limited, Trans Ocean Property and Investment Company Limited and Avalon Global Property Development Company, pleaded guilty through their repres

Mubi attack: Death toll rises to 50

Abubakar said that a young boy was responsible for the blast which occurred during the early morning prayer. “We have 50 dead and we are now trying to get the exact number of those injured ,” Abubakar said. Newsmen report that the attack happened in Dazala area of Mubi town in Adamawa on Tuesday around 5 a.m. when Muslims were observing the early morning prayer. The incident was the first in three years since the liberation of Mubi town from Boko Haram insurgents in 2014. News Enugu council polls: Police announces movement restriction

Ahead of the Local Government election in Enugu State, which comes up in few hours time, the Police have announced that there would be no movement with effect from 8 a.m. on Saturday till 4 p.m. In a statement made available to DAILY POST, the spokesman of the Enugu Police Command, SP Ebere Amaraizu stated that “ahead of the local Government chairmanship/councilorship elections slated to take place on 4th November,2017 in Enugu state, the state command of the Nigeria Police Force is advising members of the public to adhere to the movement restriction order between 8am to 4pm. “The command further wishes to inform members of the public that its operatives have been mobilized to arrest and prosecute those that will attempt to violate or violate the movement restriction order. “Those that will be exempted from the movement restriction order within these stipulated time of 8am to 4pm are those performing essential duties. Metro Nigeria Police nabs 2 suspected kidnappers in Enugu

Two notorious kidnap and cult group kingpins have been arrested by the Enugu State Police Command. This was disclosed in a statement by the command’s spokesman, SP Ebere Amaraizu, on Wednesday. Amaraizu said that the police recovered two suspected stolen motorcycles and a tiger generator. According to him, the arrest is part of the ongoing onslaught against criminal elements in nimbo and Adani axis of Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of the State. He gave the names of the suspects as Jonathan Okeagu and Simon Enejere all of Umuasa village in Ugbene Ajima community in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area. Death toll rises to 40 in Nigeria suicide blast

ABUJA -- Forty bodies have been evacuated from the scene of an early Tuesday suicide attack inside a local mosque in the northeastern Nigeria town of Mubi, according to emergency aid workers. The death toll rose from 30 as emergency aid workers combed the mosque where the attack took place after an early morning prayer, said Emma Adasolid, an official of the International Rescue Committee. Othman Abubakar, a spokesman for the police, told reporters the dawn attack was perpetrated by an unidentified teenage boy who set off the suicide vest he wore to the mosque in Kunu Araha, a suburb town of Mubi in the northern state of Adamawa. "Immediately after the prayers, he detonated the bomb," Abubakar said. "Many of the wounded are receiving treatment at various hospitals in Mubi North where the attack occurred." A former Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) and Solicitor-General of Lagos State, Mr. Fola Arthur-Worrey has stated that the reluctance of Nigeria Police to conduct proper basic investigations into criminal cases is a major reason their cases get dismissed in courts. He lamented that the Police were so accustomed to not going through the standard investigative process, and that all efforts to change their approach to doing things the right way have failed so far.
